Prilled Urea: An Essential Nitrogenous Fertilizer for Enhanced Crop Growth and Yield

Urea, recognized by its chemical formula NH2CONH2, is one of the most renowned nitrogenous fertilizers, with benefits including compatibility with most plants, especially all grains, not changing soil salinity, and not leaving salt compounds in the soil.

Over 70% of global urea production is used in agriculture, with the rest being used in the production of melamine powder, as animal feed, for medical uses, and other applications. This unit is designed under the Stamicarbon license, with an annual production of 495,000 tons of prilled urea, annual feed of 310,000 tons of ammonia, and 200 million normal cubic meters of carbon dioxide, and came into operation in June 1996. Urea is obtained from the reaction between liquid ammonia and carbon dioxide gas under a pressure of 143kg/cm2 and temperatures around 170-180°C through the following equilibrium reactions:

2NH3+CO2 <==> NH2COONH4

NH2COONH4 <==> NH2CONH2+ H2O

In the first reaction, which is exothermic and rapid, ammonia and carbon dioxide are converted into ammonium carbamate (NH2COONH4). In the second reaction, which is slow and endothermic, ammonium carbamate is converted into urea (NH2CONH2) and water. At present, the main target markets for exporting this product are Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, India, Colombo, and Malaysia.

Principal product applications: This product is used in the production of chemical fertilizers and urea-formaldehyde resins.
